Reflections on Summer

What an amazing summer it has been! Normally the summer season is a depressed time, ministerially speaking. Attendance is down and most people are away on vacations and doing their summer things. This summer was just different. We have seen attendance in the Sunday school and worship has been high and we have engaged in many different ministry opportunities. The mission trips were a wonderful success and many new people have gotten involved in missions in our church. For the first time our church has brought in a mission tem to reach out to our area. These things are evidence that God is moving in and growing our church.

In the past few months we have seen a new ministry come about to care for our military and their wives. This new ministry is being spearheaded by Becky Johnson and Abby Ayers. These are both ladies that God has led to our church in the last year. This ministry is already reaching out to new military families in our area and they are leading an effort to gather goods to send to our deployed troops. God is sovereignly leading and equipping our church for these ministries.

The coming months hold new opportunities for us to serve and to grow spiritually. I would like to encourage everyone to take part in the ministries of the church. We will be having revival services September 12-15 with evangelist Don Mathis. We as a church need to be in constant prayer that God will use these services to challenge our hearts and grow us. We should also see these services as a mission opportunity. Please be praying about who you can invite and how their lives might be changed.

We can also get involved through the upcoming discipleship classes starting on Sunday evening, September 19th. These classes will offer each individual the opportunity to grow in your faith and understanding of the scriptures.

I look forward to what the coming months will offer as I know that God is working at Olivet.

9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. 10 But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. (ESV)
